Foreign Language College

We started to grant master degrees in a relatively early age. In 1979, the School of Foreign Languages established the first Translation Theory and Practice master program in China. In 1986, we were entitled to grant such postgraduate degree and Shanghai Maritime University became one of the only two universities which are entitled, along with Beijing Foreign Languages College (now known as the Beijing Foreign Languages University). After thirty years of development, nowadays our school has four master programs, including Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics as well as English Language and Literature, in addition to eight research directions.

The School of Foreign Languages has a number of professors, scholars and teachers with high academic reputation and achievement in the fields of Translation Theory and Practice, Contrastive Analysis and Translation between English and Chinese, Foreign Linguistics, British and American Literature, British and American Culture, etc. Currently, we have more than 120 full-time teachers, including 10 professors, 32 associate professors, among which 26 teachers possess doctoral degrees and all of which who are under age 40 possess postgraduate degrees or above. We also hired four foreign experts and teachers.
