First: Synopsis of subjects
Industrial Economics, a key discipline of Ministry of Communications, was founded in 1956, and validated the master's degree of Transportation Economy in 1986 which was renamed to Industrial Economics later. It is the most distinctive discipline of Industrial Economics which is characterized by researches on sea-related and port industry among all colleges and universities in our country.
This discipline, which is basing on Shanghai and radiating to home and aboard, pursues coordinated development of these three functions: talent training, scientific research and social service. It would develop to the important base of cultivating economic talents for the construction of Shanghai international shipping center and studying economic problems. It aims to construct corresponding open platform for research, to provide support of economic talents, relative intelligence and decision-making for the national shipping, logistics and other correlative sea-related and port industries, to maintain the discourse power in academic dialog of the same field at home and aboard, to develop into influential research and talent training bases of shipping and logistics economics in East Asia and even all over the world in the medium to long-term.
This discipline has 6 professors, 4 associate professors and 8 lecturers at present, including 16 teachers with doctor’s degree and 2 teachers studying for doctor’s degree. During the past three years, this discipline, which has solid scientific research strength and rich achievement, has published more than 10 monographs and nearly 300 articles; In addition, several of research achievements have won provincial level awards of science and technology or social science. These projects have provided basis to correlative departments for decision-making, and acquired favorable economic and social benefits.
 
Second: Educational objectives
This discipline focuses on the training of high-level talents of economics who have the following attributes: solid and extensive economics theory foundation and industrial economics theory and method (including industrial development, industrial structure, industrial organization and industrial policy); to grasp economic thought and economic research methods; to be familiar with shipping, logistics, other correlative sea-related and port industries; to meet the demand for the development of China’s shipping and ocean industry, the construction of Shanghai international shipping center, the rapid growth of port industry in the middle and later period of China’s industrialization.
Graduates can be engaged in the work of economic business or economic research in comprehensive economic management sectors and other industrial area.

Statistical research of shipping and logistics economics
It studies economic problems of shipping industry, logistics industry and other port industry related with economics, statistics, econometrics theory and method, in addition, it emphasizes empirical study and quantitative analysis, and pays attention to the application of the newest achievement in statistics and econometrics area.

Literature Reading:
According to its research area, postgraduates should read a certain amount of Chinese or foreign language material and master research fronts of course development during their study, integrating with tutor’s scientific research and their own needs of dissertation project selection.
 
Sixth: Postgraduates’ practical ability development
Postgraduates’ practical ability can be developed by two major approaches, including social and teaching practice. In social practice, students are arranged to participate in research projects from government, institutes and enterprises; Students are guided to understand current needs and urgent major issues in industrial economics area, and to learn formulating strategy and measures for economic analysis; Students are developed to improve their ability of decision-making consultation and economic management of enterprises and institutions, and to improve comprehensive application ability of basic theory and professional knowledge. Thesis topics of graduates mainly come from the pieces of work for government and enterprises and institutions. Teaching practice mainly arranges postgraduates to take part in the work of teaching assistant for undergraduate courses, to assist teachers tutoring class discussion and correct students' papers, etc.
